At least 25 people have reportedly passed away from suspected methanol poisoning, and several more were injured in Russia after they drank bootleg vodka.
The cheap prices attracted a lot of individuals, but that cost them severely in the end, sources shared. As per the latest reports, a group of people in Slantsy, located in Russia’s Leningrad region, were involved in this mass poisoning incident on Friday, after consuming 90 percent vodka.
Local media outlets shared how all the victims consumed it illegally, sold alcohol products seemingly featuring methanol, and that is what led to the ordeal.
The outlet further revealed how all of the deceased were found to have high levels of methanol inside the system. Nikolai Boytsov and Olga Stepanova were detained during the investigation into the deaths. As per the authorities, empty glass bottles and plastic cans were inside the apartment. Stepanova is accused of supplying the bootleg liquor to Boytsov, who then allegedly sold bottles for nearly $1 each.
Sources also revealed how Boytsov is even accused of poisoning his partner, who is one of those killed, with alcohol. Eight more suspects were arrested for producing and distributing this vodka, Metro shared.
