Taking Putin to the UN international court, Ukraine has accused its invaders of genocide as they filed a lawsuit against Russia.
In a video address to the nation, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on the world to hold Russia accountable for their invasion of Ukraine and revealed an application for a lawsuit against the country had already been sent to the international court of justice at The Hague
“Ukraine has submitted its application against Russia to the ICJ,” the embattled president, who is staying in Kyiv while the capital remains under siege, said.
“Russia must be held accountable for manipulating the notion of genocide to justify aggression.
“We request an urgent decision ordering Russia to cease military activity now and expect trials to start next week.”
The clip comes shortly after a night of “brutal” battle for Kyiv during which Russian troops were deterred by determined Ukrainian forces from taking over the capital and overthrowing the government.
“The past night in Ukraine was brutal, again shooting, again bombardments of residential areas, civilian infrastructure,” Zelensky said in an earlier address.
“They are going to bomb our Ukrainian cities even more, they are going to kill our children even more subtly. This is the evil that has come to our land and must be destroyed.”
The president also urged the West to join the battle against the Russians whom he dubbed “war criminals.”
“Ukrainians have manifested the courage to defend their homeland and save Europe and its values from a Russian onslaught,” Zelensky said before warning that Russia has declared war on entire Europe.
“This is not just Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This is the beginning of a war against Europe, against European structures, against democracy, against basic human rights, against a global order of law, rules and peaceful coexistence.”
