Ukrainian forces have eliminated the deputy commander of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet near the besieged city of Mariupol.
In yet another blow to Putin and his armed forces, Ukrainian soldiers shot dead 51-year-old Captain 1st rank Andrey Paliy who served as the deputy commander of Black Sea Fleet.
According to the Ukrainian officials, the commander was killed near Mariupol where heavy Russian bombing continues. Though exact details of his death remain unclear, it is believed that Paliy was involved in an operation with Russian marines at the time of his death.
While the news of Paliy’s death has yet to be announced by Kremlin, the commander’s friend, Konstantin Tsarenko of the Sevastopol Nakhimov Naval School council, appeared to confirm the passing.
Ukrainian-born Paliy joined the Russian Northern Fleet back in the 90s after refusing to make an oath to the Ukrainian army. Before being named the deputy commander of the Black Sea Fleet, Paliy served as the deputy head of the Sevastopol naval academy.
The captain’s death comes shortly after several high-profile Russian military figures were killed in the attack on Ukraine.
Among the latest Russian casualties is Colonel Sergei Sukharev, the commander of the 331st Guards Parachute Assault Regiment.
“Commander of the Kostroma Airborne Regiment, Colonel Sergei Sukharev got lost in the ‘[military] exercises’, but returned home the right way,” Ukraine’s Centre for Strategic Communication and Information Security revealed after the head of the elite forces regiment was shot dead.
Sukharev’s deputy, Major Sergei Krylov, was reportedly also eliminated by the Ukrainian forces.
The Kostroma Airborne Regiment leader’s death was later also confirmed on Russian state TV where the passing of his comrades corporal Yuri Degtyaryov, sergeant Alexander Limonov, and senior sergeant Sergei Lebedev was also announced.
