According to Zelensky, the decision was not easy but gives the prisoners an opportunity to prove themselves and compensate for their crimes by fighting Russians.

“Under martial law, Ukrainians with real combat experience will be released from custody and will be able to compensate for their guilt in the hottest spots of the conflict,” the president, who recently signed an application for Ukraine to join the EU, said.

“We have taken a decision which is not easy from the moral point of view, but which is useful from the point of view of our defenses. The key is now defense.”

Meanwhile, the president urged the EU to allow Ukraine to join the bloc “via a new special procedure” even though it typically takes several years for the Union to consider and accept candidate countries.

“We appeal to the European Union for the immediate accession of Ukraine via a new special procedure,” Zelensky said.

“Our goal is to be together with all Europeans and, most importantly, to be on an equal footing. I’m sure it’s fair. I’m sure it’s possible.”

In one of his recent addresses, the Ukrainian president, who remains in Kyiv despite thousands of Russian troops closing in, also urged the invaders to defy Putin’s orders and stop the war.

“Abandon your equipment. Get out of here. Don’t believe your commanders. Don’t believe your propagandists. Just save your lives,” he said.
