Ukraine has reportedly retaken the airport in the outskirts of the capital after it was occupied by Russian special forces during the invasion.
On Thursday, Russian Air Assault forces descended on the Antonov Airport in Hostomel which lies just some twenty miles outside Kyiv after Putin ordered a “special military operation.”
The elite forces proceeded by occupying the airport which serves as a strategic point that could be used as a rallying point for Russian troops thanks to its proximity to the country’s capital.
While the airport was believed to be lost to the enemy, the Ukrainian government has on Thursday evening confirmed that they had managed to bring the invaders to their knees and reclaim the airport, Deputy Interior Minister Anton Herashchenko confirmed.
Meanwhile, the National Guard of Ukraine shared a photo of Ukrainian soldiers proudly holding up a bullet-ridden Ukrainian flag after winning the battle at the airport.
“Guardsmen with their flag, torn to pieces after today’s battle. Congratulations to all of you and say that we will win!” the National Guard wrote.
Meanwhile, it has also come to light that Ukraine’s forces captured an entire platoon of Russian soldiers as part of their retaliation against the invaders.
According to the Ukrainian commander-in-chief, up to 50 soldiers belonging to a platoon of the 74th brigade of motorcycle rifles were captured.
The entire platoon allegedly surrendered to the armed forces and insisted they were unaware that they would be ordered to kill Ukrainian people.
“Nobody thought that we were going to kill. We were not going to fight – we were collecting information,” the platoon’s commander allegedly insisted.
The news of the surrender was also confirmed by Ambassador Oksana Markarova who said:
“We’ve had confirmation from our Chief Commander one of the platoons of the 74th Motorized Brigade from Kemerovo has surrendered.
“Also noting they didn’t know they were brought in to Ukraine to kill Ukrainians. They thought they were doing something else there.”
