The heartbreaking moment an 80-year-old Ukrainian man has joined the army has been caught on camera.
Following Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, Russian troops have stormed the country and besieged the capital of Kyiv where a deadly battle for the control of the city is currently underway.
Since the Russian takeover began, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has declared martial law and banned all men aged 18 to 60 from leaving the country.
They, however, are not the only ones joining the military to protect their homeland.
Among civilians who voluntarily enlisted in the army is an 80-year-old man who vowed to put his life on the line to fight for his nation.
The bittersweet photos of the man and his conscription were shared by former First Lady Kateryna Yushchenko who revealed that the grandfather wants to “fight for his grandchildren.”
“Someone posted a photo of this 80-year-old who showed up to join the army, carrying with him a small case with 2 t-shirts, a pair of extra pants, a toothbrush and a few sandwiches for lunch. He said he was doing it for his grandkids,” she wrote in a now-viral post.
The empowering photos come as President Zelensky shared a touching address to the nation outside the presidency building and revealed he would stay and fight alongside his people despite the Russian troops closing in on him.
“We’re all here. Our military is here. Citizens in society are here. We’re all here defending our independence, our country, and it will stay this way,” Zelensky said in a self-recorded video.
In the video, the president could be seen alongside his aides and Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal on the streets of Kyiv where a fierce battle is taking place.
