Ukrainian forces have successfully regained control of the Chernobyl power plant, reports have confirmed.
Shortly after the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February, Putin’s troops besieged the power station and put the plant at risk of another nuclear disaster.
Following their occupation of the Chernobyl nuclear site, Russian soldiers reportedly forced Ukrainian power plant staff to work overtime with little to no sleep and food.
Now, it has been revealed that the power plant has been retaken by Ukraine, whereas the majority of Russian soldiers on the site have already left.
The news was confirmed by the National Nuclear Energy Generating Company of Ukraine and The Ukrainian Atomic Energy Ministry.
Confirming the events was also the International Atomic Energy Agency which claimed that the invaders have surrendered control of the plant to Ukrainian personnel “in writing.”
Earlier, the Ukrainian authorities revealed that several convoys of Russian soldiers left Chernobyl and headed toward Belarus.
“The information is confirmed that the occupiers, who seized the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and other facilities in the exclusion zone, have set off in two columns towards the Ukrainian border with the Republic of Belarus,” Energoatom confirmed.
Meanwhile, it was also reported that the Russians have since left the nearby town of Slavutych where most power plant staff live.
While the majority of troops left the nuclear plant, an undisclosed number of them are allegedly still preparing for departure.
“We are observing what is happening there. So far we do not have the information 100 per cent that they have left the power station,” Ukrainian energy minister Herman Halushchenko said.
