Haunting photos from Ukraine show young children hiding inside bomb bunkers in preparation for Russian attacks.
Following Putin’s swift invasion of Ukraine, explosions could be seen in several main cities, including the capital of Kyiv, while Russian troops began occupying strategic locations and attacking Ukrainian military targets.
Amid the deadly conflict that reportedly already resulted in hundreds of casualties, harrowing pictures of young children fearing for their lives have begun surfacing the internet.
In the disturbing photos taken at a primary school in Druzhkivka, children as young as five are seen being led into underground bunkers as part of drills in preparation for Russian air raids.
Too young and too small to climb onto the ledges in the shelter, the kids were hoisted up by adults.
With their arms wrapped around their knees, the children can be seen awaiting their fate with fear and confusion in their eyes.
While raid drills at the school in question take place twice a year, Wednesday’s drill was part of emergency preparations in response to Russia’s invasion and looming danger.
Meanwhile, children in the city of Kharkiv are practicing evacuation drills and learning about first air, explosives, and bulletproof vests.
“We let them try on our uniforms, bulletproof vests and helmets. Show them what explosive items can be, so that they can become aware of situations that may happen to them,” defense specialist Oleksandr Shevchuk said.
Preparing for air raids on populated areas is also the capital of Kyiv where four metro stations were converted into makeshift shelters.
