A picture of an exhausted Ukrainian soldier proudly hoisting his nation’s flag outside the Chernobyl power plant has gone viral.
Shortly after the beginning of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, Russian troops attacked and occupied the power plant site where a nuclear disaster occurred in 1986.
In a recent turn of events, however, Ukrainian forces managed to retake control of Chernobyl and nearby towns, whereas Russian troops have reportedly retreated from the region.
Since recapturing the strategic point, the Ukrainian General Staff of the Armed Forces confirmed that “units of the Assault Troops of the Armed Forces of Ukraine took control of the area of the city of Pripyat and the area of the State Border of Ukraine with the Republic of Belarus.”
A photo showing a Ukrainian soldier proudly hoisting a Ukrainian flag outside the power plant has since also gone viral.
The news of Ukraine’s recapturing of the Chernobyl plant was also confirmed by the National Nuclear Energy Generating Company of Ukraine and The Ukrainian Atomic Energy Ministry.
Elaborating the turn of events, the International Atomic Energy Agency insisted that the Russian invaders have since surrendered control “in writing.”
Previously, it was reported that a number of convoys carrying Russian soldiers left Chernobyl and headed toward Belarus.
“The information is confirmed that the occupiers, who seized the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and other facilities in the exclusion zone, have set off in two columns towards the Ukrainian border with the Republic of Belarus,” Energoatom revealed.
While it remains unclear whether the retreating soldiers will be restationed or sent back to Russia, it has been reported that some Russian troops who were stationed at the Chernobyl plant remain in Belarus for treatment over radiation exposure.
