The January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol was launched by the mob trying to stop the confirmation of Joe Biden’s electoral college win. The attack resulted in five deaths and injured 140 members of law enforcement.

In a statement released by Trump, he said: “I am canceling the January 6th Press conference at Mar-a-Lago on Thursday and instead will discuss many of those important topics at my rally on Saturday, January 15th in Arizona.”

“This is the Democrats’ Great Cover-Up Committee and the Media is complicit. Why did Adam “Shifty” Schiff forge and change the statement of Congressman Jim Jordan without any consequence? Why will Crazy Nancy Pelosi not provide her communications with the House Sergeant-at-Arms and the House Chief Administrative Officer, or promise to retain these vital messages, which many feel she has already destroyed — perhaps illegally?” he added.

Trump was supposed to host the press conference from his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, and was expected to double down on the lie that he won the 2020 presidential election.

He also blasted the House panel that is currently investigating the events leading up to the fatal riot in Washington and accused the news media of assisting congressional Democrats on the panel with “the Crime of the Century”.

A person familiar with the situation told CNN that Trump decided to call off the event due to the news media’s apparent lack of interest in covering it live on Thursday. Trump had been expected to use the press conference to rail against the congressional committee investigating the January 6 Capitol Riot.

Documents recently published by the committee revealed how the former president’s allies planned a campaign to intimidate election officials and spread voter fraud falsehoods, while another appeared to call for the seizure of “evidence” in service of his false claims that propelled the attack and his spurious bid to overturn election results.point 434 | 1

In recent weeks, the committee has accelerated its probe into the attack, fuelled by conspiracy theories that the 2020 presidential election was rigged, and a violent attempt to reject the votes of millions of Americans.

Commemoration events will be held to mark the occasion. A television set has been installed at the Capitol building to show the commemorations of the day. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are due to speak and some elected officials will share their memories of the ordeal.

Some Senate Republicans had already expressed their Uneasiness around Trump holding a conference on the anniversary of the day that his supporters stormed the Capitol building just to try to stop the congress from certifying the election for Biden. Senator John Thune, a Republican said: “Hopefully his comments will be helpful, not harmful.”

Before the deadly riot, Trump told thousands of supporters near the White House that the election was “stolen” and urged them to march to Capitol Hill to support objections lodged by Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) against the certification of electors from key swing states.

The mob subsequently stormed the Capitol, sending lawmakers and Vice President Mike Pence fleeing to safety and disrupting the certification of President-elect Joe Biden’s victory in the Electoral College.

House Democrats joined by 10 Republicans impeached Trump last January for allegedly inciting the riot. Trump was acquitted by the Senate in a 57-43 vote, with seven Republicans finding him guilty, short of the two-thirds threshold required by the Constitution.
