Any peace deal that would see Ukraine cede territory to Russia in the hopes of ending the war could get deeply unpopular with the Ukrainian people.
This would also be so illegal under the nation’s constitution. As confirmed by President Trump, who is all set to meet with Russian President Putin in Alaska’s Anchorage on Friday, he has suggested that a concession is needed involving an exchange of territories in Ukraine that would be better for both sides.
However, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, has categorically rejected any suggestions related to the transfer of land, adding that it’s not only illegal but also could result in Putin’s raging war from that territory as well.
Kyiv would not give Russia any kind of awards for what it has done, Zelensky confirmed. Ukrainians would not be giving up land to the occupier either.
For the leader of Ukraine, these types of deals would transform into a major political disaster, and it would risk serious public outcry after a span of nearly three years of intense bloodshed and major sacrifice.
Crucially, he lacks the authority to sign such a deal, as altering Ukraine’s 1991 borders runs counter to the nation’s constitution.
