A truck belonging to a church supplies company crashed into the gates of the Russian embassy in Ireland.
In a clear protest against Russia and Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, a large truck owned by Desmond Wisley Ecclesiastical Supplies brought down the gates of the diplomatic mission in Dublin, Ireland.
As seen in footage of the Monday incident, the truck reversed before crashing into the gate as people stood by and watched on.
After the gate was destroyed, the Garda – Irish state police force – arrested a man and brought him to the Rathfarnham Garda Station.
“Gardaí are investigating an incident of criminal damage that occurred at a property on Orwell Road this afternoon, Monday 7th March 2022 at approximately 1.30pm,” a spokesperson said.
“One male was arrested and taken to Rathfarnham Garda Station where he is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984. Investigations are ongoing.”
Meanwhile, the Russian Embassy in question accused the police of doing nothing while the attack on the diplomatic mission was taking place.
“A large truck came over to the gates of the Embassy, pulled back and torn down the gates of the Embassy. The incident took place in the presence of Garda officers, who stood idle,” a spokesperson for the embassy claimed.
“The embassy strongly condemns this criminal act of insanity directed against peaceful diplomatic mission.
“The embassy views this incident as a clear and blatant violation of the Article 22 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic relations of 1961. The embassy is in contact with the Department of Foreign Affairs of Ireland, demanding that the Irish authorities take comprehensive measures to ensure the safety of its staff and their family members.”
The incident comes just two days after a local priest smeared red paint across the gate and the Russian Confederation coat of arms at the same embassy in protest against the war in Ukraine.
