The unnamed interpreter was reading halfway before her voice cracked through the microphone.

Zelenskyy had been giving updates on the situation of Ukraine as Russian forces attacked Kyiv overnight.

“Russia is on the path of evil, Russia must lose its voice in the UN,” the beginning of Zelenskyy’s speech reads.

The translator continued: “Ukraine, we definitely know…” she then stopped and tried to hold her tears before saying “what we are defending…”

Her voice cracked and the microphone went quiet.

The interpreter took a deep breath before she continued, saying ‘sorry’ to the viewers.

Zelenskyy had said in his speech: “The night was hard. The people rose to defend their state and they showed their true faces. This is terror.”

He continued: “They are going to bomb our Ukrainian cities even more. They are going to kill our children even more insidiously.

“This is an evil that has come to our land and must be destroyed.”

Zelenskyy also gave updates on his discussions with foreign powers.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his nuclear forces on high alert in response to what he described as ‘aggressive statements’ by NATO powers.

This move is “potentially putting in play forces that, if there’s miscalculation, could make things much, much more dangerous,” a senior US defense official said.

Street fights also broke out in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city, and strategic areas in the south came under pressure from Russian forces.

Ukrainian soldiers put up a strong resistance that seemed to slow the invasion.
