In a sharp critique, the Governor of California, Gavin Newsom was seen accusing President Trump of throwing a lavish Great Gatsby themed event at the White House at the most inappropriate time.
He shared that millions of Americans are facing hunger as SNAP benefits were about to disappear for 42 million people, adding that the President does not give a damn about you.
The party in question was hosted at Trump’s private club in Palm Beach. It featured jazz age costumes, a banquet setting, and a celeb style gathering in the form of private guests. The whole event echoed the 1920s and the president was seen having a blast.
Meanwhile, the federal food assistance program Supplemental Nutrition Fit Access had expired due to the never ending government shutdown. Newsom slammed the dramtic optics of this situation. Federal aid was hanging in the balance and the president’s glamorous social event struck out as deeply tone deaf.
His criticism was mostly underlining the huge contrast between reported high end indulgence and widespread economic hardship. As a whole, the piece frames the incident as emblematic of broader tensions that included: political stalemate over funding, public fragility amid shutdowns, and the optics linked to leadership crisis.
