A double-decker bus has reportedly crashed and landed in upside-down manner after careening down a slope.
The incident left 18 people dead and more than 48 people injured, as confirmed by local media outlets. The tragedy took place in Peru, where the health minister confirmed that the bus was on its way from Lima towards the country’s Amazon forests, specifically inside the Junin region.
The bus comes under the ownership of Expreso Molina Lider Internacional who was said to be carrying 60 people when it crashed inside a ravine as per DW News.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of this incident, as per the outlet. Video of the devastating aftermath was shared, which showed the police and rescue workers sifting through wreckage and trying to maneuver themselves through the overturned vehicle. This latest footage showed the bus split into two in the wake of the tragedy.
This is not the first major fatal incident involving a bus in Peru this year. Another bus reportedly crashed into a river in January, killing six people and injuring 32 more. A previous one in April last year caused the death of 24 people, and that made it the nation’s deadliest crash several years back.
