The Social Security Administration’s acting commissioner has resigned over the weekend after a dispute with the Department of Government Efficiency DOGE.
This was over the Elon Musk-led group’s efforts to access sensitive government records.
Michelle King who is a career federal worker has been with the SSA since 1994. He quit over the DOGE disagreement on Saturday and happened to be replaced by Leland Dudek.
Dudek was a strong supporter of DOGE’s efforts to remove waste, fraud, and all kinds of abuse in the federal government. They will now serve as acting commissioner of SSA until Trump’s decision to pick the lead for the agency.
For now, Frank Bisignano has been confirmed by the Senate. DOGE staffers embedded at the SSA sought access to sensitive files in a similar manner that they saw at various other federal agencies like the Treasury Department since Trump began his cost-reducing initiative.
The agency had a list of every social security number that was issued as well as work and pay history and banking details for millions of Americans. Moreover, the SSA also kept medical records of Americans who applied for disability benefits.
