40-year-old Wali, whose real name remains confidential for safety reasons, is a professional sniper from Canada who served in the Royal Canadian 22nd Regiment and fought in the Afghanistan War between 2009 and 2011.

In 2015, the sniper and his comrades were dispatched to Iraq where they fought ISIS and historically shot a terrorist from more than two miles away.

While Wali has since settled down with his wife and welcomed a baby boy, who is now one year old, into his family, he decided he could not turn a blind eye to the situation in Europe and Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

Answering President Zelensky’s call for international aid, the retired fighter joined a brigade led by another retired Canadian soldier and traveled to Eastern Europe to help Ukrainians “like a firefighter who hears the alarm ringing.”

“A week ago I was still programming stuff. Now I’m grabbing anti-tank missiles in a warehouse to kill people… That’s my reality right now,” the sniper said in an interview with CBC News.

“I know it’s just awful, but me, in my head, when I see images of destruction in Ukraine, it is my son that I see, in danger and who is suffering.”

As his wife added, stopping her husband from leaving to help Ukraine would be the same as putting him in a jail cell.

Speaking of his decision to leave his family behind and put his life on the line, Wali said:

“I want to help them. It’s as simple as that. When I see a destroyed building, it is the person who owns it, who sees his pension fund go up in smoke, that I see.

“I have to help because there are people here being bombarded just because they want to be European and not Russian. I’m going there for humanitarian reasons.”
