White smoke was seen emerging from the chimney above the Sistine Chapel to announce the arrival of a new Pope being elected.
Crowds were seen erupting into loud chants of ‘Viva la Papa’ and screams of happiness as the Vatican’s bells started to ring.
The successful vote comes after two rounds of voting in the morning could not produce a final result for the next Pontiff.
Crowds gathered in St. Peter’s Square and started to cry as they saw white smoke emerge just after 5 pm.
Two more rounds of voting are set to be held in the afternoon. Black smoke first billowed from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel on Wednesday evening.
The most likely candidate to be given the honor of being the next Pontiff is Cardinal Peter Erdo from Hungary, who is a conservative.
During the migrant crisis last decade, he ordered all the church doors in Hungary to close to migrants, saying we would become human smugglers if we accepted refugees.
