Sir Bobby Charlton, Manchester United Legend And World Cup Winner, Passes Away At The Age Of 86


Manchester United legend and England World Cup winner Sir Bobby Charlton has passed away at the age of 86.

He died peacefully surrounded by his loved ones. He is survived by his wife Lady Norma and their children Andrea and Suzanne and grandchildren.

His grieving family said in a statement: “It is with great sadness that we share the news that Sir Bobby passed peacefully in the early hours of Saturday morning. He was surrounded by his family.”

They added: “His family would like to pass on their thanks to everyone who has contributed to his care and for the many people who have loved and supported him. We would request that the family’s privacy be respected at this time.”

Charlton, who played an integral part in England’s 1966 World Cup triumph, made 758 appearances for his club and earned more than 100 caps for his country.

His extraordinary career started after surviving a plane crash that took the lives of 23 people, including eight of United’s Busby Babes.

In a statement, Manchester United said: “Manchester United are in mourning following the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton, one of the greatest and most beloved players in the history of our club. Sir Bobby was a hero to millions, not just in Manchester, or the United Kingdom, but wherever football is played around the world.”

“His unparalleled record of achievement, character, and service will be forever etched in the history of Manchester United and English football.”

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak described him as ‘one of the game’s greatest players.’

Prince William, the president of the FA, called Sir Bobby a ‘true great who will be remembered forever.’
