Columbian superstar Shakira has been informed about an eight-year-long jail sentence.
According to local media reports, the news comes after the celeb was accused of tax fraud worth $16 million, causing outrage with prosecutors in Spain.
The pop star was warned of dire consequences coming her way, in case she was found guilty in a trial related to tax fraud. But the singer claims she has done absolutely nothing wrong and therefore was not interested in settling the matter outside court.
Meanwhile, Spanish prosecutors are not backing down. Instead, they’ve accused the heartthrob of being involved in six counts related to defrauding between the years 2012 and 2014.
The 45-year-old mother of two seems to be very confident about her stance in this particular case, adding how she hasn’t got a worry in the world, as revealed by her publicist and legal time.
On the other hand, the prosecutors are even going as far as requesting a court judge in Barcelona to fine her 19 million pounds because they believe she used her powerful sources to dodge taxes between the years 2012 to 2014.
The singer’s legal team confirmed recently how Shakira has paid all the money that she is accused of, and that included a staggering amount of interest that totaled up to 3 million pounds.
The prosecutors would also be fining her for 19 million pounds, let alone the eight-year-long jail sentence, sources confirmed.
These charges have been a part of an indictment that was made public today only. It accused Shakira of doing everything to avoid tax, including making it appear that she was living abroad. In addition to that, the lawsuit alleges she made use of a complex offshore corporate structure, which would again allow her to evade tax.
At that time, the celeb was in a relationship with star soccer player Gerard Pique, who also happens to reside and play his matches in the same country.
