Shocking reports are speaking about a massive fire that broke out at a seven-storey office building in the Indonesian capital city of Jakarta today.
The massive blaze arose during the midday hours on the building’s first floor, with some outlining the storage or testing area as the main culprit. The blaze is believed to have spread in an upward direction throughout the structure. This building housed the offices of a drone service firm called Terra Drone Indonesia, local media outlets shared.
Workers were said to be trapped inside at the time that the blaze arose, killing dozens of people, including a pregnant woman. So far, the death toll has risen to 22 people, but authorities fear that it will increase.
The blaze is said to have occurred on the building’s first floor and then went straight up, where employees were said to be gathered to have lunch during break time. As the flames and thick smoke increased, they spread rapidly and engulfed the whole building.
Firefighters were seen rushing to put out the blaze as some managed to escape from emergency ladders present on the upper floors. Dozens of units were busy at work, and the blaze was eventually extinguished after a few hours.
This incident marks one of the deadliest office building fires in recent times. The recovered victims were rushed to the hospital for identification, and rescue teams were said to have painstakingly searched the premises to see if there were any more people still trapped inside.
