Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko has warned that the West’s serious sanctions on Russia are pushing the Kremlin into WWIII.
His remarks came as Moscow and Kyiv agreed to hold ‘peace talks’ at the border with Belarus but Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky admitted that he was not confident to have a good resolution.
The EU revealed more measures against Russia, banning Kremlin propaganda outlets Sputnik and Russia Today and closing off its airspace to all Russian planes.
In response to the sanctions, Russian carrier Aeroflot said it was suspending flights to Europe.
“Now there is a lot of talk against the banking sector, gas, oil, SWIFT,” Lukashenko said.
“It’s worse than war. This is pushing Russia into a Third World War. We need to be restrained here so as not to get into trouble. Because nuclear war is the end of everything.”
On Sunday, Ukraine’s health ministry said that 352 people, including 14 children, had been killed, and 1,684 people, including 116 children, had been injured since the beginning of the invasion.
Zelensky described his conversation with the Belarus president as ‘very substantive,’ saying he made it clear he didn’t want soldiers to move from Belarus to Ukraine.
“I do not really believe in the outcome of this meeting, but let them try, so that later not a single citizen of Ukraine has any doubt that I, as president, tried to stop the war,” he added.
This comes after Putin ordered troops operating the nuclear deterrent to a “special regime of duty” in response to “unfriendly economic actions” and “aggressive statements” from NATO leaders.
“This is dangerous rhetoric,” said NATO secretary general Jens Stoltenberg.
