Putin has launched a massive offensive in a desperate bid to overcome the Ukrainian resistance in the east of the country.
Shortly after Russian troops retreated from Kyiv and the surrounding regions, experts have warned that they are likely just repositioning to encircle the remaining defenders in East Ukraine.
Warning that the entire region of Donbas will become the next Bucha was also President Zelensky who urged the West to send more weapons and aid to help repel the offensive.
“I began this day with a meeting with the military and government officials on the situation in combat zones. Russian troops are preparing for an offensive operation in the east of our country,” he said yesterday.
“It will begin in the near future. They want to literally finish off and destroy Donbas. Destroy everything that once gave glory to this industrial region.”
He added: “The democratic world must also react to what the occupiers are doing in the south of Ukraine – in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions,” Zelensky added.
“Torture chambers are built there. They abduct representatives of local authorities and anyone deemed visible to local communities. They blackmail teachers. They steal pension money. They create starvation.”
Now, the Ukrainian president has once again spoken out and revealed that the big battle for Donbas has already begun.
“We can now confirm that Russian troops have begun the battle for the Donbas, which they have been preparing for a long time. A large part of the Russian army is now dedicated to this offensive,” Zelensky claimed today.
“No matter how many Russian soldiers are brought here, we will fight. We will defend ourselves.
“I am grateful to all our fighters, to all our heroic cities in Donbas, Mariupol, as well as to the cities in the region of Kharkiv that are being held.”
The news comes as concerning photos showing Russian bombers patrolling the skies near Russia’s border with Ukraine have emerged.
In the pictures, Tupolev Tu-95 strategic bombers, which may be armed with nuclear or non-nuclear weapons, are seen accompanied by fighter jets in striking distance of Ukraine.
It is currently not clear what the purpose of their mission was and whether the bombers were armed with nuclear weapons during the show of power or not.
