The Russian government has threatened to strike Kyiv and eliminate Ukraine’s high command in a chilling statement.
As the Russian onslaught in eastern Ukraine continues, the country’s defense ministry warned that Russian armed forces “will strike decision-making centers” including those in Kyiv where President Zelensky resides if Ukrainian troops retaliate by attacking Russian territory.
“We are seeing Ukrainian troops’ attempts to carry out sabotage and strike Russian territory. If such cases continue, the Russian armed forces will strike decision-making centers, including in Kyiv,” the ministry said.
The threats come after conflicting Russian reports claiming gunfire was heard on Russian territory near the border with Ukraine.
While authorities in the Kursk region initially alleged that a border checkpoint came under attack, they later retracted their statement.
In an update, the Korenevsky district officials claimed: “An hour ago, gunfire was heard in the adjacent territory near the village of Gordeevka. There were no casualties or damage on our side.”
It is unclear whether this report is true. It is also unclear whether Ukrainian forces were behind the alleged attack or if the whole thing was staged to serve as an excuse for Russia to launch counterattacks.
Russia’s latest warning to Ukraine’s command comes shortly after President Biden called Putin a war criminal and accused him of committing genocide.
“Your family budget, your ability to fill up your tank – none of it should hinge on whether a dictator declares war and commits genocide a half a world away,” Biden said in his speech at the POET Bioprocessing facility in Iowa earlier this week.
He later told the reporters it has become clear what the Russian dictator wants to achieve.
“I called it genocide because it’s become clearer and clearer that Putin is just trying to wipe out even the idea of being Ukrainian. The evidence is mounting,” he added before boarding Air Force One.
