“All of humanity” is at risk of suffering from the consequences of a nuclear war, a United Nations human rights chief warned.
Amid Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, the Russian dictator put his nuclear forces on high alert and warned the West not to aid Ukraine in its fight against Russia.
The move made by the country that owns the most nuclear warheads in the world sparked concerns around the globe with world leaders condemning Putin and accusing him of putting world security and peace at great risk.
Responding to the West, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov appeared to mock the world’s justified fears while admitting that WW3 “can only be nuclear.”
“It is clear that World War Three can only be nuclear,” he said. “I would like to point out that it’s in the heads of Western politicians that the idea of a nuclear war is spinning constantly, and not in the heads of Russians.”
Now, a United Nations Human Rights chief blasted Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and warned of the risks that Putin’s actions carry.
“Elevated threat levels for nuclear weapons underline the gravity of the risks to all of humanity,” Michelle Bachelet said during a Human Rights Council meeting in Geneva.
Bachelet also claimed that the war in Europe is “generating massive impact” for millions of people across Ukraine who were forced to flee for their lives after the bombings began.
Putin’s bold move regarding his nuclear forces was also condemned by the White House and arms experts in the US.
“This is really a pattern that we’ve seen from President Putin through the course of this conflict, which is manufacturing threats that don’t exist in order to justify further aggression — and the global community and the American people should look at it through that prism,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said.
A senior administration official added: “At every step of this conflict Putin has manufactured threats to justify more aggressive actions — he was never under threat from Ukraine or from NATO, which is a defensive alliance that will not fight in Ukraine.
“The only reason his forces face a threat today is because they invaded a sovereign country, and one without nuclear weapons. This is yet another escalatory and totally unnecessary step.”
