Imane Khelif was recently informed that she would need to return her Olympic Gold Medal that she won at the last Paris Olympics.
This order came from the President of the Boxing Authority, who says she was stripped after failing gender tests. Despite that, she was allowed to compete in the event last year.
The boxer from Algeria won the gold medal in the women’s 66kg division at the Paris Games by beating Yang Liu in the final.
But her victory brought about intense debate that lingers to this day after the International Boxing Association revealed she had failed what it labels as a major gender eligibility test at the previous World Championships.
Until now, the IBA has not shared any details about the procedure undertaken after the tests but in a new interview this week, the IBA mentioned how Khelif was provided a 21 day period where she could appeal.
This is after her test results showed both XY chromosomes, with the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
However, the star athlete did not appeal and was immediately disqualified from the World Championships, as shared by the IBA.
The star returned to the ring at the Paris Olympics and won the gold as she passed the eligibility criteria set by the International Olympic Committee, which was based on what an athlete’s passport shared regarding gender.
The IOC took over running boxing at the 2024 Olympics due to concerns it had with the integrity of the IBA.
Now, almost a year after the Paris Olympics, the head of the IBA, Umar Kremlev, wants Khelif to return the boxing gold medal.
