Panic erupted in a Chinese city after the sky suddenly turned blood red.
The incident took place in the port city of Zhoushan where baffled residents took to the streets and looked up in amazement after the sky turned completely red.
In a video that has since received more than 150 million views on Douyin – China’s TikTok – the blood-red sky can be seen spanning the horizon and giving the city a post-apocalyptic feel.
Soon enough, people began panicking on social media and suggesting the red sky is a bad omen symbolizing that “accidents will happen.”
Others also revealed they already started stocking up on supplies and preparing for the worst.
After the apocalyptic fears had spread and caused panic among the residents, however, local media has confirmed there was nothing to worry about saying the red sky is simply a result of light refraction under uncommon circumstances.
“When weather conditions are good, more water in the atmosphere forms aerosols which refract and scatter the light of fishing boats and create the red sky seen by the public,” the Zhoushan Meteorological Bureau announced, the Global Times reported.
Meanwhile, China Aquatic Products Zhoushan Marine Fisheries Co confirmed that one of their fishing boats that was operating near the port at the time may have been responsible for the rare spectacle.
As amazing as it may seem, the sky turning blood-red is nothing new, whereas historians recently came across reports of such instances dating back to the 18th century.
Researchers have since the Saturday event also suggested that geomagnetic storms caused by solar eruptions could be responsible for the red sky in Zhoushan.
Chinese media, however, refuted this notion saying the geomagnetic activity was low when the sky turned red.
