After the tragic passing of Sinead O’Connor, past interviews about the reason behind her trademark shaved head have emerged again.
The late singer was most well known for her version of Prince’s ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ as it became the world’s number one single in the year of its release.
She also released ten studio albums throughout her incredible career.
In an interview with Dr. Phil in 2017, O’Connor opened up about her painful childhood as well as the reason behind her buzzcut.
She discussed the abuse that she suffered at the hands of her mother, who died in a car accident.
“She was not well. She was very, very, very not well. I would say she was possessed,” the singer said.
“Although I’m not sure I believe in such things. She ran a torture chamber. It was a torture chamber. She was a person who took delight and smile in hurting you.”
Speaking about why she decided to shave her head, O’Conner explained: “My sister had the most beautiful red hair, glorious red hair, the type you’d be jealous of. But my mother took it into her head that my sister’s hair was ugly, and horrible and disgusting.
“And she started when I had long hair, she would introduce us as her pretty daughter and her ugly daughter.
“And that’s why I cut my hair off. I didn’t want to be pretty.”
O’Conner’s struggles with mental health became public after she revealed on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2007 that she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
She also revealed how she had tried to end her life on her 33rd birthday.
Last year, her son Shane died and this led to her being admitted to the hospital.
