Royal correspondent Katie Nicholl appeared on the BBC and told presenter Huw Edwards that the Queen, who passed away peacefully at the age of 96, “knew she wasn’t going to come back (to Windsor Castle or Buckingham Palace), I think she wanted to be in Balmoral and she wanted to pass there.”

“The Queen, with serious health issues, decided nonetheless that she did want to spend a good deal of time at Balmoral during the summer,” Huw said.

“That decision speaks volumes really about the fact that she was A) very comfortable to be in Balmoral, somewhere where she was happy to be with lots of good memories, but knowing too, with health issues and the challenges there, it might be a difficult stay and yet she insisted on making the journey.”

Katie then responded: “She insisted on making the journey and I think, she was the Queen of Scots and I think she wanted this to be part of her homecoming, her ultimate homecoming.”

She also said that it was “deeply moving” to see the Queen’s coffin leave Balmoral, “knowing that she would never return to the place where she’d enjoyed holidays as a little girl.”

Katie also said that the fact that the Queen passed away peacefully in Balmoral is “a blessing in all of this.”

The Queen’s late husband, Prince Philip, also loved the Scottish estate. He became known for his legendary barbecues when staying there.
