A principal was forced to resign for allegedly “upsetting” students by showing the statue of David.
Michelangelo’s statue is a Renaissance masterpiece created from marble in the early 16th century. The iconic sculpture, which shows a fully-nude David, remains one of the most popular statues in the world with its original resting at Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence, Italy.
While most people see the statue as nothing more than a piece of art, the sculpture seemingly upset a number of parents whose children attend the Tallahassee Classical School in Florida.
According to the reports, the school’s principal, Hope Carrasquilla, was forced to resign after facing a backlash for showing pictures of the statue of David to students between 11 and 12 years old.
As some parents insisted, the photos were “upsetting” and “inappropriate” for such a young audience.
“Parental rights are supreme, and that means protecting the interests of all parents, whether it’s one, 10, 20 or 50,” Barney Bishop, the school board’s president, said as he admitted he told Carrasquilla she would be fired if she didn’t resign of her own free will.
The now-former principal has since spoken out and told HuffPost that one of the parents “felt her child should not be viewing those pieces” and was “point-blank upset” after finding out the photos of David were shown in the classroom.
Several other parents also complained that they weren’t informed about the controversial lesson before it happened due to an error in communication between the principal and the parents.
“It saddens me that my time here had to end this way,” Carrasquilla added.
