The new Prince of Wales has spoken out after his grandmother’s funeral via a video call to an event in New York.
According to reports, Prince William had been scheduled to fly to the US on September 21 and attend the Earthshot Prize Innovation Summit but said that he couldn’t be there in person due to the ‘saddest of occasions.’
In a video recorded at the Windsor Estate, William said he believed the late monarch would have ‘been delighted to hear’ about the summit, where he would’ve been joined by previous winners of the global environmental competition.
“During this time of grief, I take great comfort in your continued enthusiasm, optimism and commitment to The Earthshot Prize and what we are trying to achieve,” he said.
“Protecting the environment was a cause close to my Grandmother’s heart, and I know she would have been delighted to hear about this event and the support you are all giving our Earthshot Finalists – the next generation of environmental pioneers.”
The Earshot Prize was founded by the former Duke of Cambridge and his Royal Foundation in 2020.
In July this year, it became an independent charity, with the Prince of Wales as the president.
“Together in this room, are the people and organizations who will help us to achieve the Earthshot mission: to repair, restore and rejuvenate our planet within this current decade,” William continued.
“That mission is not simple.”
William also said that discovering, celebrating, awarding and scaling sustainable solutions can inspire ‘urgent action.’
“So today, as you hear the incredible stories of last year’s Finalists, I invite each of you to join me on this journey. Because this is just the start,” he added.
