Ukraine’s president once again earned a standing ovation after delivering a defiant speech in which he promised to fight Russia to the end.
In an address to the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, President Volodymyr Zelensky shared a bold message for Putin as he vowed to continue fighting the invaders in a speech echoing the famous words of Winston Churchill during World War 2.
“We will not give up and we will not lose. We will fight to the end, at sea, in the air, we will continue fighting for our land, whatever the cost,” the embattled president, who remains in Ukraine’s capital of Kyiv, said.
“We will fight in the forests, in the fields, on the shores, in the streets.”
In his speech, the Ukrainian president compared Putin’s invasion to the actions of Nazi Germany and insisted Ukraine neither started nor wanted war with Russia.
Addressing members of the parliament, Zelensky added that Ukraine is fighting back to save its independence and democracy “just the same way as you once didn’t want to lose your country when Nazis started to fight your country and you had to fight for Britain.”
During the empowering speech, Zelensky went on to accuse Russia of committing war crimes by killing countless civilians including dozens of children.
After his address, the Ukrainian president received a standing ovation.
Responding to Zelensky, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said “Britain and our allies are determined to press on with supplying our Ukrainian friends with the weapons they need to defend their homeland as they deserve.”
The PM also vowed to “press on with tightening the economic vice around Vladimir Putin” and stop importing Russian oil.
