The Foreign Office issued a statement after an earthquake was recently detected off the coast of Greece this morning.
The news has given rise to fresh fears for Crete and a possible tsunami warning that might hit the Greek island.
The EMSC shared a tsunami warning and also advised people in countries like Greece, Italy, and Turkey, as well as France and Portugal, to refer to local authorities for an update.
The tremors were felt across the Aegean Sea, including parts of Turkey and Israel.
Residents in places like Crete reported through EMSC how they were woken up by the quake, while others called it as objects falling from shelves on the lower floors of their homes, with the fear of seeing the building sway and creak.
Local media outlets shared supermarket items on the floors, while other reports spoke about rockslides on rural roads. However, thankfully, no major damage has been reported until now.
Now, residents fear the major tsunami might hit Crete and Santorini, but what does this mean for travelers who are making plans to head to the popular holiday hotspot?
The country’s Climate Crisis and Civil Protection advised both locals and visitors to act as per the information given by local authorities.
