Police searching for missing British girl Madeleine McCann issued a statement and revealed that they had found a ‘relevant clue’ while searching a reservoir in Portugal.
It was in 2007 when Maddie vanished from an apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, while her parents Gerry and Kate McCann were at a nearby restaurant.
Authorities are still searching for the young girl as the family’s story continues to gain attention worldwide.
Now, police searching for Maddie stated that they had found a clue while searching a remote reservoir around 50km (31 miles) from where the girl disappeared.
In a statement via CBS, German police – who led the search – said: “As part of the investigation into the case of Madeleine McCann there are currently measures related to the criminal process taking place in Portugal.
“The measures are being implemented by the Portuguese law enforcement authorities with the support of officers of the [German] Federal Criminal Police Office. Further information on the background will not be released at this time.”
Police searching the remote reservoir were seen combing through rocks with spades and rakes and searching the ground with pickaxes.
Officers also cut down trees and used sniffer dogs as part of the search.
“(The search) resulted in the collection of some material that will be subject to the competent expertise. The material collected will be handed over to the German authorities.”
German prosecutor Christian Wolters said that while officers were searching for remains, they were also looking for any clues.
According to reports, the materials that have been collected by police will not be announced soon as officers need some time to investigate.
Officials also said that they have ‘concrete evidence’ that Madeleine is dead but this claim is still not confirmed, as per the Independent.
