The Trump administration plans to reclaim total control over Washington, DC’s historic Union Station, which is an iconic rail hub that was once seen as a grand architectural gem that federal officials claim has turned into a crime-ridden dump.
Instead of being a point of pride, the Union Station has fallen into a state of disrepair. By reclaiming station management, they hope to make the city safe again.
The Department of Transportation has owned the Union Station since the start of the 1980s, but slowly ended up giving up control to the Union Station Redevelopment Corporation, which is a nonprofit charged with preserving the historic travel hub.
Due to a lack of revenue, the station ended up deteriorating with time. This is why the Trump administration wishes to step in and leverage the commercial aspects of the Union Station as part of a new deal with Amtrak and USRC to fund improvements to elevators, lighting, security, as well as repairs.
The agency mentioned how it anticipates the reinvestment and improved security, and dramatically improves the income from the station, which should unlock serious opportunities for private investment as part of the potential expansion for the station.
