A deadly chain reaction crash recently took place at about 1:10 pm on the westbound lanes of the Interstate 10 Freeway near Ontario, California.
This incident entailed eight vehicles, and four of the eight were outlined to be commercial trucks, sources confirmed. As per the California Highway Patrol, traffic ended up slowing down or stopping when a 21-year-old semi truck driver failed to stop in time and plowed into the line of vehicles.
Investigators suspect that he was under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash. As a result, three people were pronounced dead at the scene and at least four more were hospitalized with injuries ranging from minor to major.
The crash also triggered a hazardous material situation after fuel spilled from the semi-truck onto the freeway shoulder, causing lane closures and complicating emergency responses. Authorities have since then taken the driver into custody on suspicious of DUI and vehicular manslaughter. Right now, the investigation is ongoing and that includes questions related to driver licensing status.
All westbound lanes of the interstate were closed for extended periods of time and the only exception of the two FasTrak Lanes, as these were the transition roads from the I-15 to I-10 westbound. As of late Tuesday afternoon, the lanes remained closed and there is currently no estimate as to when they might reopen.
