More than 800 people were said to have been killed and nearly 2500 injured after a massive earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan late on Sunday.
The quake devastated several different towns in the province of Kuna which is located near the border with Pakistan. This is centered 17 miles northeast of the city of Jalabad in Nangarhar.
Some 800 individuals are believed to have lost their lives and were declared injured in the Kunar province, as shared by the Taliban spokesperson during a recently held press conference.
This was in Kabul on Monday as rescue teams desperately tried to reach the survivors. A further 12 people had lost their lives and nearly 255 were said to be injured in the Nangarhar province, as confirmed by the Afghan official. Taliban led authorities in Kabul said they are busy trying to figure out the exact death toll as they work to reach remote areas.
Sharafat Zaman who is the head of the ministry of public health mentioned how several villages were completely destroyed by the earthquake with rescue operations hampered by the damage and fierce weather conditions.
Zaman mentioned how many areas had not been able to report the casualty figures and that the figures were expected to alter as death and injuries are reported.
