A furious Oscar-winning producer has lashed out at Will Smith and Chris Rock as he accused the pair of robbing other attendees of their time to shine.
Joseph Patel, who won an Oscar for producing the 2021 documentary Summer of Soul during the 94th Academy Awards on Sunday, blasted presenter Chris Rock over his insensitive jokes while accusing Hollywood star Will Smith of stealing attention.
In a furious rant on Twitter, the award-winning producer wrote: “I’m angry. Angry at Will Smith. Angry at Chris Rock. Angry for me. Angry for Ahmir. Angry for my fellow filmmakers.”
As Patel insisted, Smith’s actions were “selfish” and he “robbed the category of its moment” when he drew attention to himself by slapping Chris Rock in the face.
“It robbed the other excellent and amazing films of their moment to be acknowledged in what was a STRONG year for docs. And it robbed Summer of Soul and our team of our moment. Of a loud, enthusiastic cheer for a celebrated film,” he added.
The producer also unleashed his fury at Rock as he accused the host of making a racist joke as he announced Summer of Soul as the winner.
“What I didn’t hear in that moment walking to stage but was told of afterwards is what Chris Rock said when reading our name from the winner’s card – The winner is ‘Summer of Soul …Ahmir ‘Questlove’ Thompson and 4 white guys.’ WHAT IN THE ACTUAL F**K?????” Patel tweeted.
“The reason that makes me SO SO VERY ANGRY is because I was so proud to be one of a handful of South Asians to have ever won an Oscar in the history of the award.
“So with my family and friends watching, Chris Rock lumped me in as 1 of ‘4 white guys. (Nevermind the disrespect to @d2films and @fyvo for not even saying their names, and the inaccuracy of us being 3 producers not 4).”
Concluding his rant, Patel went on to call Rock an “absolute fu**ing di**” and say “both Will and Chris did really stain what should have been a beautiful moment for us.”
Following hours after his rant went viral, Patel decided to delete his Twitter thread saying he already said what he wanted to say.
