Heartbreaking photos from Ukraine show the devastating effects of Putin’s invasion and the ongoing war in the country.
In pictures taken at underground shelters and basements in Ukraine, children and babies can be seen packed in small rooms. Meanwhile, young mothers are being forced to give birth in unbearable conditions away from their partners.
In a tear-jerking and yet defiant post, Novovolynsk Hospital, which lies on the west side of the country, revealed how a refugee woman from Kyiv was forced to give birth at a makeshift bomb shelter after suddenly going into labor while on the run.
“Meet our newborn defender, 3.5kg, 55cms. On the fifth day of the war between Russia and Ukraine, a baby appeared at Novovolynsk hospital for a couple of immigrants from Kyiv,” the hospital announced.
“Alarm sirens are heard all over Ukraine, in Volyn [the district in which the hospital is located] as well. But life does not end even during the shelling. We wish the baby a peaceful sky.”
A mother from Mariupol was also pictured cradling her newborn baby at a maternity hospital basement unit that was converted into a bomb shelter during the Russian invasion.
The war is also not sparing young children, whereas the National Guard of Ukraine shared a photo showing dozens of kids, including babies, cramped into a small underground room in the city of Kropyvnytskyi.
“This is a shelter in a specialized orphanage in the city of Kropyvnytskyi in Ukraine. All the children there are orphans. Many are sick,” they wrote.
Meanwhile, World Health Organization shared a picture of elderly people who have been stuck inside an underground shelter at the Novovolynsk hospital for days.
“This hospital in Novovolynsk, western #Ukraine, is moving their patients to an underground shelter to keep them safe following air raid sirens. Hospitals are getting ready to provide support to the wounded,” WHO captioned their Instagram post.
