Didi Conn has spoken out and recalled her final conversation with her co-star Olivia Newton-John.
Olivia and Didi had been friends for decades after first meeting each other on the set of Grease before the musical’s premiere in 1978.
Recalling the legendary actress, who passed away on Monday following a long battle with breast cancer, Didi said her first impression of Olivia was that she was “gorgeous” and “perfect.”
“She was nervous. The first scene we had together – coming on the first day of school – and she told me, she had been in another movie and it didn’t go as well as she had hoped, so I just began improvising with her,” the ‘You Light Up My Life’ star said as she appeared on Good Morning America.
“I said, ‘Oh, I’m so happy.I have a neighbor named Sandy who came from Australia’ and we just, you know, all of a sudden she’s looking at me like, ‘Is this in the script? What’s going on here?’ We started to play too and before we knew it, we were walking into Rydell and she thanked me afterwards and she said she would always be grateful for that.
Conn went on to suggest that she will always remember her friend not only as a big rock star and an excellent actress but also as a kind person with a “big heart.”
“I think that’s how I’ll always remember her – this big heart who just cared so much for everybody. And we will honestly always love her too,” she added.
Choking up, the 71-year-old actress also recalled the final conversation she had with Newton-John just weeks before she passed away.
“She told me that her health was, you know, she wasn’t walking anymore and she had full-time care but her husband John and her daughter Chloe were there all the time, and she told me that they were just so hopelessly devoted,” Conn said.
In another interview, she further recalled the last text exchange with her friend in which they promised to keep each other in their hearts forever.
“Olivia’s death feels so personal to me and so many other people because she cared so much. Her heart was so big,” she added.
Our thoughts remain with Olivia’s family and friends.
