The idea of a nuclear war has become a very real and terrifying possibility, a former military chief warns.
As the conflict in Europe continues, Russia has put its nuclear forces on high alert and warned NATO countries not to interfere or face unimaginable consequences.
With no sign of peace in the air, UK-based Air Marshal Edward Stringer, a former RAF Assistant Chief of Air Staff and former Director-General of Joint Force Development at Strategic Command, warned that the use of nuclear weapons has become a real possibility.
The veteran military chief also warned that the deployment of nukes could be “only a few steps away.”
“It’s no longer unthinkable and it will clearly be weighing on the minds of those who are making all the political calculations at the moment,” Stringer told LBC about the prospect of a nuclear war.
When asked by presenter Nick Ferrari whether he believes it’s possible that Russia would resort to the use of nuclear weapons, he added:
“It’s in the realms of possibility, and that’s what people have to get their heads around. In other words, can he sketch a plausible chain of events? And you can.
“And that is why when there were calls for no-fly zones, the political leadership was quick to point out that NATO is a defensive alliance, NATO is not being attacked, NATO is not constructed to go onto the offensive, if it did it would be taking on another nuclear power – Russia.”
The former military chief warned: “Russian nuclear doctrine has within it the use of nuclear weapons. That’s only a few steps to get from where we are now to a confrontation that could see the use of nuclear weapons, which I think is a pretty terrifying prospect for anybody sensible.”
