Concerning reports of Europe’s biggest nuclear plant catching fire have emerged.
On early Friday, the mayor of the town of Energodar revealed that the Russian troops have besieged the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and fired on buildings at the site.
The news is backed up by a live feed that shows parts of the facility, which is the biggest in Europe, going up in flames.
The attack on the plant comes amid Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and shortly after a Russian convoy moving towards the nuclear plant was stopped by brave Ukrainian civilians from Enerhodar.
In a bid to delay the Russians’ advance, the civilians formed human barricades and blocked the roads with sandbags and garbage trucks.
“This is how Enerhodar – its civilians – women and men, protect their city,” Mayor Dmitri Orlov said yesterday.
“They will continue to protect it. Now, more than ever, we need to mobilize our forces, to be together, so that the enemy does not enter the city, which is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe! Let’s be ready, friends!”
Now, however, “shooting from all sides” was reported at the power station, whereas Russian tanks were spotted firing at some of its buildings, sparking concerns about potential radiation leaks and a nuclear disaster.
“As a result of continuous enemy shelling of buildings and units of the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is on fire,” Energodar Mayor Dmytro Orlov said.
Meanwhile, a Ukrainian official claimed that elevated levels of radiation have since the Russian attack been detected at the site, The Associated Press reports.
