North Korea fired a ballistic missile towards Japan amid growing concerns about President Kim Jong-un’s missile tests.
On Sunday morning, North Korea launched an unidentified projectile believed to be a ballistic missile from the east coast’s Sunan area.
The missile reportedly flew for 186 miles before crashing into the Sea of Japan after reaching the maximum altitude of 373 miles.
While the missile landed outside of Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EZZ), this marks the eighth time Kim Jong-un and his regime performed missile tests this year.
The news was confirmed both by South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff and Japan’s Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi who claimed North Koreans fired “at least one ballistic missile.”
Kishi went on to brand the alleged test as “unacceptable” before adding that it serves as a “threat to the peace and security of Japan, the region, and the international community.”
“It’s clear that North Korea is rapidly and steadily improving its related technologies and operational capabilities, and this cannot be tolerated or overlooked,” he insisted.
Condemning North Korea’s military undertakings was also the Blue House which expressed “deep concern and grave regret” over the actions taking place on the Korean Peninsula while the eyes of the world are focused on the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The short-range ballistic missile test comes nearly a month after January 30 when Pyongyang launched an intermediate-range ballistic missile known as Hwasong-12.
As experts have since suggested, the North Korean dictator is determined to perfect his arsenal of weapons while showing the world that they are not to be underestimated.
“North Korea is not going to do anyone the favor of staying quiet while the world deals with Russia’s aggression against Ukraine,” international studies associate professor Leif-Eric Easley said.
“Pyongyang has an ambitious schedule of military modernization. The Kim regime’s strength and legitimacy have become tied to testing ever better missiles.”
