NFL legend Tom Brady has spoken out to announce his retirement and reveal the reason for calling it quits.
The New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers star released a lengthy statement about his decision on Tuesday after days of speculation and denials surrounding his retirement.
“I have always believed the sport of football is an ‘all-in’ proposition – if a 100% competitive commitment isn’t there, you won’t succeed, and success is what I love so much about our game,” the quarterback, who scored 7,263 passing completions over 84,520 passing yards, wrote on Instagram.
“There is a physical, mental, and emotional challenge EVERY single day that has allowed me to maximize my highest potential. And I have tried my very best these past 22 years. There are no shortcuts to success on the field or in life.
“This is difficult for me to write, but here it goes: I am not going to make that competitive commitment anymore. I have loved my NFL career, and now it is time to focus my time and energy on other things that require my attention.”
The quarterback who helped his clubs take home seven Super Bowl titles went on to thank his children and his wife Gisele Bundchen as he branded them as his “greatest achievement” and “inspiration.”
Though Brady also thanked his Buccaneers fans and the city of Tampa in his lengthy statement, he failed to mention the Patriots despite being with the club for 20 seasons before switching to Bucs in 2020.
Following his announcement, however, the Patriots owner, Robert Kraft, issued his own statement in which he said watching Brady play was a privilege, prompting the 44-year-old NFL legend to respond by saying: “Thank You Patriots Nation. I’m beyond grateful. Love you all.”
