Netflix has come under fire after it was revealed that the streaming giant is bringing back the Titanic movie just days after the OceanGate tragedy.
According to the reports, the iconic 1997 blockbuster drama will once again be available on the streaming platform beginning July 1.
The news comes just days after it was confirmed that five people died when the Titan submersible imploded underwater during its journey to visit the Titanic wreckage.
Now, angry social media users lashed out at Netflix and its bosses saying it was “disrespectful” and “beyond distasteful” to bring the movie back at this time.
Some critics also accused the streaming giant of using the tragedy to get new subscribers on board.
“People died in a tragic accident [at] the Titanic site and now to capitalize on the moment to garner viewers is beyond distasteful,” someone wrote.
“Netflix is overstepping the boundaries of decency on this timing,” another said.
A third fumed: “The timing is absolutely wrong, don’t they have any shame??”
One disgruntled user said: “Nah this is insane they really tryna make a bag off 5 people dying.”
Amid the backlash, Variety confirmed that sources with knowledge of the movie’s return to Netflix confirmed that the entire thing was planned months ago and that it is completely coincidental with the OceanGate disaster.
The news comes shortly after the Titanic director, James Cameron, reacted to the news of the sub’s implosion and the death of five passengers on board.
“A number of the top players in the deep submergence engineering community even wrote letters to the company, saying that what they were doing was too experimental to carry passengers and that it needed to be certified,” he said.
“I’m struck by the similarity of the Titanic disaster itself, where the captain was repeatedly warned about ice ahead of his ship, and yet he steamed at full speed into an ice field on a moonless night and many people died as a result.
“For us, it’s a very similar tragedy where warnings went unheeded. To take place at the same exact site with all the diving that’s going on all around the world, I think it’s just astonishing. It’s really quite surreal.”
