NATO is getting ready to establish a permanent military presence on its borders with Russia, it has been revealed.
As NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg revealed, the military alliance is in for a major “reset” to counter Putin’s ongoing aggression in Europe amid his invasion of Ukraine.
While only a small, symbolic number of NATO troops were typically deployed to Baltic countries – including Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia – a permanent deployment of a strong military force to the three NATO countries bordering Russia is in the works.
According to the secretary general, the full-scale military force will serve as means of preventing Russia from invading Baltic countries while allowing the alliance to hold off potential attacks without the need for additional reinforcements.
“What we see now is a new reality, a new normal for European security. Therefore, we have now asked our military commanders to provide options for what we call a reset, a longer-term adaptation of NATO,” Stoltenberg said.
“I expect that NATO leaders will make decisions on this when they meet in Madrid at the NATO summit in June.”
The secretary general also told the Telegraph that the new deployment will reflect the “long-term consequences” of the Russian invasion and Putin’s blatant attack on a sovereign nation.
Stoltenberg also took the opportunity to point out that some 40,000 NATO troops are currently already defending the alliance’s eastern flank.
Previously, the number of NATO soldiers deployed to these regions was ten times smaller, experts say.
