A legendary American television writer and co-creator of Murder, She Wrote has passed away at the age of 88.
Peter S. Fischer was best known for co-creating and executive-producing several episodes of the beloved 1980s crime drama series. The writer and producer was also well known for his roles in crime series like Columbo, Ellery Queen, and Baretta.
His death was confirmed by his grandson, Jake McElrath, who revealed that Fischer died on Monday at a California care facility.
Throughout the 80s and early 90s, Fischer produced as many as 264 episodes of the CBS crime series Murder, She Wrote before stepping down after seven seasons.
“I left after seven years because I didn’t know how, as a writer, to keep finding really fresh ideas,” he previously said of his decision to step down and let minds with fresh ideas take over the flow of the series.
“I knew we could rehash old plots with different locales and different names and the ratings would hold up, but I would have been bored and we would have been shortchanging the audience.”
The tragic news comes just a year after the show’s leading lady, Angela Lansbury, died peacefully in her sleep at the age of 96.
Fischer is survived by children Christopher and Megan as well as his grandchildren Eden, Peter, Molly, Jake, Nicholas, and Samantha.
The producer’s wife of almost six decades, Lucille, passed away in May 2017.
