A young boy who went missing during a family camping trip has been found after spending two days in the wild all alone.
8-year-old Nante Niemi was on a trip in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park in Michigan on Saturday when he suddenly disappeared and failed to return despite his loved ones’ frantic calls.
By late evening, after the family asked for help in finding the boy, several search teams were deployed to look for the missing child but bore little success in the first 24 hours of searching.
Fortunately, the young boy was found alive and well some 48 hours after he disappeared from his parents’ sight. He is believed to be in good condition despite spending two nights all alone in the woods.
According to the reports, Nante was found hiding under a log some two miles from his family’s campsite.
“From our Hurley School Community to the hundreds of volunteers and organizations that helped bring Nante back safely, we can’t even adequately express our sincere gratitude,” the boy’s school district, the Hurley School District, said in a statement after the boy’s reunion with his family.
“Although our emotions are very raw at this time, we want to acknowledge the extreme outpouring of love and support we received over these past few days!
“May all those who took part in the search and rescue efforts know that your work will have a positive impact on many lives forever!”
During the 48-hour search, over 150 rescuers from different departments were deployed. Several K9 units also contributed to covering forty square miles’ worth of wooded area.
Michigan State Police has since warned visitors of the state park that cell phone service is non-existent in some parts.
“The Michigan State Police wish to thank all of the volunteers and support services that assisted in locating this child,” their statement added.
