President Trump is seeking a major settlement of nearly $230 million from the Department of Justice in relation to two federal investigations.
One has to do with an alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election, and the other is linked to his handling of classified documents linked to his residence in Mar-a-Lago.
According to reports from local media outlets, he filed two administrative claims. The first one was dated the end of 2023 over the Russian-investigative probe, and the second one was related to the middle of 2024 regarding the classified documents investigation. That was tied to the 2022 FBI search.
In remarks made to the press, Trump shared how he does not even talk to them about this, but that they would owe him a lot of money, adding that if any payout were made, he would give it to charity.
The situation is especially unusual and raises ethical and conflict of interest concerns, since the Department of Justice includes officials who were formerly his personal lawyers or defenders.
The Department of Justice says its career ethics officials review all matters and gave no further comments on the specifics of this kind of claim. Trump also mentioned how the money would be going to charity and he would not be keeping any of it, adding how he’s expecting a huge sum from them.
