Meghan Markle has made a bizarre move to trademark an English word that has been in use for nearly five centuries.

Archewell Audio, one of eleven companies established by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex following their retreat from the UK, has filed a request to trademark the word ‘Archetypes’ which Meghan began using as the title of her Spotify podcast.

According to the reports, the application for the exclusive use of the Greek-derived word that was recognized in the English language in the 1540s was submitted to the United States Patent and Trademark Office back in March.

As per the Oxford dictionary, archetype refers to “the most typical or perfect example of a particular kind of person or thing.”

Meanwhile, Merriam-Webster describes the archaic word as “the original pattern or model of which all things of the same type are representations or copies.”

As it happens, however, Meghan isn’t the first person to lay her eyes on the term, whereas she could find herself in a legal dispute with others who use it such as the skincare products business Archetypes for instance.

The trademark application comes after Meghan proudly announced the birth of her Spotify podcast in which she aims to “dissect, explore, and subvert the labels that try to hold women back” according to a teaser.

“I’ll have conversations with women who know all too well how these typecasts shape our narratives. And I’ll talk to historians to understand how we even got here in the first place,” the Duchess said.
